More About Pan-as Falls & the Calbayog Watershed:

1. Location & Significance
Pan-as Falls is located in Barangay Pilar, in the Oquendo District—about an hour’s drive from Calbayog City proper, followed by roughly a one-hour walk through forested terrain. It lies at approximately 274 meters above sea level.

2. A Vital Water Source
More than a scenic site, Pan-as Falls is a crucial primary source of water for local communities, including Calbayog residents and those in Barangay Pilar . It’s also integral to the Calbayog City Water District systems.

3. Protected Landscape & Biodiversity
The waterfall sits within the Calbayog Pan-as–Hayiban Protected Landscape, a protected watershed with a total area of around 7,832 hectares, established initially as a forest reserve in 1967 and later reclassified as a protected landscape in 1998.

The area supplies fresh water not only to Pan-as Falls but also to other vital sources like Pasungon Falls and the Himoni River.

4. Environmental Stewardship & Reforestation
To preserve and protect this watershed, Manila Water—through its Calbayog Water subsidiary—has been actively engaged in tree planting initiatives within the protected landscape. In 2022 alone, they planted 625 trees (including cacao and toog species) across 1.5 hectares in Barangay Manuel Barral.

5. Scenic Features & Experience
Viewed from a distance, the waterfall resembles a long, mountain-side boat, with high-elevation drops that turn into a fine mist before reaching the plunge pool. It’s surrounded by rare timber stands, wildlife, and forest vegetation—an enchanting natural backdrop for visitors

Pan-as Falls, tucked within the Calbayog Pan-as–Hayiban Protected Landscape in Barangay Pilar, Oquendo District, is one of Samar’s most scenic and important waterfalls. Standing at about 274 meters above sea level, this multi-tiered cascade is fed by the Hayiban River and surrounded by dense forests rich in biodiversity.

Getting here is an adventure in itself—about an hour’s drive from Calbayog City followed by a refreshing trek through lush terrain. Along the way, you’ll pass streams, towering trees, and glimpses of other smaller falls.

Beyond its beauty, Pan-as Falls plays a vital role as a primary water source for Calbayog City and nearby barangays, making it both a natural wonder and a lifeline for the community. It’s part of a 7,832-hectare protected watershed established to safeguard the area’s forests, wildlife, and clean water supply.

The falls are best visited during the rainy months, when the flow is at its most powerful, creating a cool mist that blankets the surroundings. Whether you’re here for photography, a picnic, or simply to enjoy the pristine atmosphere, Pan-as Falls offers a perfect mix of relaxation and nature appreciation.
